Abstract
It is shown that software coupled with proven hardware provides the solution for controlling the grinding variables for roll grinders. The control system presented provides the user with the following benefits: (1) the ability to grind rolls with precise motion control to obtain predictable accuracy and surface finish with a minimum of operator input; (2) computer control of the four main grinding variables, i.e. wheel speed, infeed, roll speed, and traverse; (3) reduction of machine downtime by the computer-based control interface that monitors critical operations and provides diagnostics for troubleshooting; and (4) optional on-machine caliper with display of measured roll data that enables the operator to make online corrections of the roll profiles (printout of final grind profile to specified tolerance).<>
