Humic substances are usually regarded as the major DBP precursors in water. As compared to humic substances, algae can contribute significantly to the DBP precursors. A comparison of the DBP formation between algal cells and humic substances during chlorination in the laboratory was investigated. According to elemental and fluorescence analysis, alage contain more nitrogenous compounds than humic acid, and generate less THMs due to produce other N-DBPs. The molar ratio Br-/Cl2 is an important factor for THM formation and speciation.
