Abstract
The author presents the results of an informal survey conducted among representatives of various companies that produced technical documentation in significant quantities and of significant importance to the organization, to determine what is being done in the area of strategic planning for technical communication and product information activities. In addition, the literature was surveyed for studies relating to such planning. The result is a report of what is being done in the area of planning for technical communication and product information. Also included are an alternative to the present `reactive´ communication management process, and a look at the value of strategic planning, insofar as it was revealed in the responses
