Abstract :
The author compares knowledge engineering with technical communication, and argues that technical communicators are well suited to assume the role of knowledge engineer. Seven activities are discussed which constitute a practical development strategy for knowledge-based systems: (1) harvesting knowledge, (2) selecting the right problem, (3) preparing the development plan, (4) selling the system, (5) selecting your tools, (6) building the prototype, and (7) incremental development and fielding the system
