The aim of this work was to determine the kind of short-chain volatile fatty acid, which is apt to be used by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). SRB was feed with culture media used sodium lactate as carbon source. Sulfate reducing rate and different short-chain volatile fatty acids (VFA) utilization rate with SRB were studied. Sulfate variation curves were drawn and used to calculate Ks, Vmax and Vmax was contrasted. It is indicated that the affinity between SO42- and SRB decreases in the order of propionic, n-butyric and acetic acids; the sulfate maximum reducing rate by SRB decreases in the order of propionic, n butyric and acetic acids; the practical utilization rate of every kind of short chain volatile fatty acids by SRB also decreases in the order of propionic, n-butyric and acetic acids. To make full use of the carbon sources in the sludge and improve sulfate reducing reactor efficiency, sludge acidogenic fermentation should be controlled toward propionic acid-type fermentation.
