Abstract
The correct constitutive relations of general linear media must be properly decided in the time domain because causality is frequently a major casualty of frequency-domain manipulations. We show that the widely used symmetries found by O´Dell (1970) for magnetoelectric media came from noncausal analysis. We also show that the correct constitutive relations must obey Post´s (1962) constraint
