A combination of MBBR+MBR was applied in treating saline CMC process wastewater. The inoculated nonhalophilic bacteria were acclimatised to the saline wastewater. During acclimation period, MBBR showed excellent restoration from and acclimation to salinity. Through long HRT (5~15 days) or low organic loading (1.565 kg COD/m3·d on the average), COD removal efficiency of around 90% was achieved in the MBBR tank in most instances. The PVDF hollow fiber membrane guaranteed the effluent MLSS below 5 mg/L, while the MLSS in the Membrane tank was kept below 5000 mg/L. Membrane fouling was effectively mitigated through regular air-water backwash and periodic chemical wash. Salinity had aggravated membrane fouling, so more measures were taken to mitigate it, such as dosing dilute NaCIO into backwash water and strengthening the bottom aeration in the Membrane tank.
