Polygalacturonic acids, the main contributor of anionic trash, could be degraded by pectinase into monomeric galacturonic acid, resulting in the elimination of the cationic demand (CD) of white water. The addition of chemical fixing agent could destabilize the dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS), decrease the CD of white water. In this paper, papermaking white water of bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP) was treated by the pectinase, chemical fixing agents and the combined method respectively. Results showed that the CD of white water can be decreased by 77.43% when treated by pectinase 5U/L (50°C, 30min, pH 7.8), and PA of 0.05 g/L, HCS of 0.05 g/L and CPAM of 0.005 g/L respectively. Also the turbidity of white water and mean particle diameter of DCS were decreased by 21.82% and 21.50% respectively. The DCS was analyzed by GC-MS and the results indicated that the chemical fixing agent could fix the resin acids on the fibers and remove them away effectively. The GC-MS analysis also proved that pectinase degraded the polygalacturonic acids into monomeric galacturonic acid effectively.
