In order to improve the efficiency of biological nitrogen removal, a two-compartment SBBR operated with alternate aeration and fill was proposed. A traditional SBBR was divided into two identical compartments by a piece of vertical clapboard, and was filled by ceramic particles for biofilm growth. The reactor was operated: fill from the left inlet, aeration by the right aerator, draw, fill from the right inlet, aeration by the left aerator, draw. Alternate operation created one compartment with high DO and the other with low DO and stored carbon to improve nitrification and denitrification, respectively. TN removal rate could reach up to approximately 89.2%. The effect of aeration rate on effluent TN concentration and TN volumetric load was tested and analyzed. Aeration rate ranged from 0.2m3/h to 0.6m3/h in the aeration compartment was recommended.
