Abstract
The day to day operation of an island power system differs considerably in many ways from that of large interconnected networks. In particular, the control of system frequency in isolated systems poses technical problems that are an order of magnitude greater than those experienced by large interconnected networks. The control of system frequency also has to be achieved in relatively short timescales. The Electricity Supply Board of Ireland is such a system and some of its operational issues are highlighted in this paper. In particular, frequency regulation and primary frequency control are addressed. The modelling of system incidents is examined and in the light of new market structures a discussion of important considerations is presented.
