Abstract :
The IEEE 802.15.4 standard was designed especially for low-rate low-power personal area networks. It does not specify any energy conservation for devices while operating in non-beacon mode. Therefore, all coordinators will be always in transmit, receive or idle state and such a network will consume significant amount of energy. To cope with this problem a new energy-efficient topology control algorithm for 802.15.4-based wireless sensor networks operating in non-beacon mode is proposed. Based on location information, the proposed algorithm minimizes a set of coordinators thus reducing redundant coverage of the network area. It requires only 1-hop neighborhood information to do so. Also it provides synchronization technique for peer-to-peer topology networks. In other words, the proposed algorithm makes the dense network sparser than existing algorithms do. Since only selected nodes act as coordinators at the particular time interval, it reduces whole network energy consumption and prolongs operational network lifetime thus increasing packet delivery ratio. The simulations show that the proposed algorithm improves energy-efficiency of the 802.15.4-based peer-to-peer wireless sensor network about twice and also improves packet delivery ratio.
