The nitrogen loss in runoff from paddy fields in plain tidal river network region were studied through leaching-pond location and artificial rainfall experiment, taking Shangahi as the research area. The results were as following: 1) the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) in the field surface water decreased rapidly after application of ammonium bicarbonate. The concentration of TN account 25.13~50.25% of the initial concentration about 1~2 days and lower than 10% on the 4th day after fertilization; 2) the concentration of Nitrogen(N) increased first during 1~3 days and deceased afterward after application of urea; 3) The artificial rainfall experiment indicated that the rainstorm possibly caused great nitrogen losses, TN losses could reach 5.54~7.95 kg/ha by 40 mm precipitation and 16.74~24.02 kg/ha by 80 mm precipitation on the 2nd day after the first fertilization; 4) Drainage should be controlled strictly during sowing and drying periods, otherwise it would cause great nitrogen losses about 10 kg/ha; 5) Application of organic fertilizer could reduce nitrogen fertilizer amount and nitrogen losses. It was important for reducing agricultural nitrogen non-point source pollution and protecting surface water, which had not affected paddy yield.
