Eight English ivy (Hedera helix) cultivars were evaluated for their effectiveness in absorbing toluene and xylene of three concentrations in a simulated indoor environment. Meanwhile, the chlorophyll content, plasma membrane permeability, MDA content and POD activity were measured to assess their tolerance to toluene and xylene stresses. The results show that with the increase of the concentration of toluene and xylene, the removal capability of eight English ivy cultivars was increased. H. helix ´Ivalance´ performed best in removing toluene under three levels of toluene, followed by ´Evergreen´ and ´Lady Key´, and the removal capacity of ´Golden Child´ was the lowest. H. helix ´Lady Key´ performed best in removing xylene under three levels of xylene, followed by ´Evergreen´ and ´Ivalance´, and the removal capacity of ´Mint Kolibri´ was the lowest. The chlorophyll content, relative conductivity and MDA content of eight cultivars of H. helix were all increased with the toluene and xylene concentration. However, the changes of POD activity increased at the beginning and then decreased.
