To understand the effect of inherent sulfur in coal on the formation of NO precursors during coal pyrolysis, the experiments for raw coal and desulfurised coal pyrolysis in argon atmosphere were conducted by using a drop-tube/fixed-bed reactor and IC analyzer. The results show that the yields of NH3 during raw coal pyrolysis are lower than those of desulfurised coal. This indicates that the existence of sulfur in coal can influence the formation of NH3 and HCN, which is approved by model compounds experiments. The results for nitrogen contained model compound (pyridine) and sulfur contained model compound (thiophene) pyrolysis show that formation of HCN and NH3 decreased during pyridine pyrolysis in the presence of thiophene.
