Three types of titanium (Ti) based nanoscale titania (TiO2) were produced by controlling the reaction conditions, including TiO2 nanotubes, TiO2 nanonetworks and TiO2 nanoparticles. Human Osteosarcoma cells (MG63) were used in this study to evaluate the bioactivity and cytocompatibility of the new materials. Compared to flat Ti, cell adhesion of the materials coated with nanoscale TiO2 was significantly enhanced after 2h, 24h, and 72 h of co-incubation, according to SEM photographs. More importantly, compare to the control group, the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) released into the culture media and the absorbance of MTT showed no obvious difference after 72 h of co-incubation. Therefore, it is suggested that nanoscale TiO2 is a bioactive and cytocompatible biomedical material.
