Synthetic musks, including HHCB, AHTN, MX and MK, were detected in 98 biological samples collected from Shanghai. The concentrations were at medium level compared with the data reported in other regions. The levels of polycyclic musks (HHCB+AHTN) were higher than that of nitro musks (MX+MK), and the distributions in wild-caught samples were HHCB>; (or≈) AHTN >; MX >; (or≈) MK. Species dependent changes on concentrations were found, and significant concentration differences were also observed between wild-caught and market samples. Human exposure via consumption of fish was calculated and the estimated level was quiet low.
