Abstract :
Summary form only given. We place injection and shift currents in the context of nonlinear optics by identifying their description with real, physical divergences in the nonlinear optical susceptibilities. Experimental and theoretical progress is reviewed, and extensions of the theory to include excitonic effects and scattering phenomena are discussed.
