Abstract :
This paper presents single and three phase topologies, employing power MOSFET based four quadrant switches (4QSWs), of the bi-directional buck-boost type improved power quality AC-DC converter which outputs variable bi-directional DC voltage and reversible current. The converter topologies are simulated for bi-directional buck and boost modes at 50 Hz and 5 KHz AC supply frequencies. The simulations, involving switching frequencies up to 50 KHz, are conducted; adopting pseudorandom switching of the 4QSWs. Performance analyses of the topologies suggest a correlation between the switching frequency and magnitudes of reactive elements. The currents at the AC interface are waveshaped by suitably altering the switching pattern, rendering operation of the converter in any quadrant, in any mode and at any power factor. The results of the simulations confirm the feasibility and effective performance of the proposed converter topologies and the efficacy of the switching strategy
