Alternol is purified from fermentation production of microorganisms named as Alternaria alternata var. monosporus. This research is to investigate the apoptosis-inducing by alternol in human pro myelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. SRB method was used to evaluate the viability of HL-60 cells. Flow cytometry assay was used to examine the apoptosis rate of HL-60 cells and AO/EB staining was used to observe cell morphology. JC-1 staining was used to detect the change of mitochondria membrane potential in HL-60 cells. The proliferation of HL-60 cells was inhibited remarkably in a time-dependent and dose-dependent manner by alternol; the mitochondria membrane potential of HL-60 cells decreased. The results indicate that alternol is a potential agent for leukemia chemo-therapy.
