  • Abstract
In this paper, we present a saturable transformer based method to gate drive a synchronous rectifier. The saturable transformer (ST) is placed in series with the synchronous rectifier (SR) to sense the turn off and the turn on transitions of the SR. When the SR is off and its anode to cathode voltage goes positive, the ST generates a voltage signal, which will amorce the gate drive circuit to turn on the SR, In addition, when the SR is on and its current goes negative, the ST generates a voltage signal, which amorces the gate drive circuit to turn off the SR. The saturable transformer method presented in this paper has been tested on the two switches forward power converter topology. In this implementation, the input voltage is equal to 100 V, the output voltage is equal to 9 V and the output load is 20 A. The full load measured efficiency is close to 94%. The details of the experimental results are presented in section 4
