Abstract :
A method has been developed for snow mapping in mountain areas and on glaciers by means of C-band SAR, based on multitemporal ERS-1 SAR images and combining images from ascending and descending orbits. The SAR derived snow maps have been successfully applied for daily runoff modeling in an Alpine basin during a full period of snow and glacier melt. The case study demonstrates the high operational potential of SAR for snow and glacier hydrology
