Abstract
The measurement of surface roughness, on the scale of millimetres to centimetres, is significant for an accurate measurement of soil moisture from space-borne microwave sensors. The authors investigate the use of dual frequency radar altimeter derived backscatter coefficients from Topex/Poseidon to obtain roughness measurements for arid lands. The analyses of the satellite data are compared with physical measurements of the surface conditions, made during a field campaign in the Simpson desert, Australia
