Abstract :
A new method of densitometric determination of absolute cross section areas from coronary angiograms is demonstrated. After adjusting orthogonal views and eliminating severe nonlinear components in the image analysis chain (spatial inhomogeneity, scattering/veiling glare, beam hardening) absolute cross sectional areas can be measured within 6% accuracy. The absolute cross sectional area is calculated by comparison of the intensity profiles across the vessel with a reference model in front of the patient. The validation is done by means of an opacified tube model within the chest phantom. It is shown that the densitometric data are influenced by sources of error due to many nonlinear components in the image analysis chain. Each of these errors was corrected and their influence on the absolute cross-sectional area was determined
