Abstract :
Summary form only given. We report on a new type of optical reporter suitable for in vivo and in vitro diagnostics: molecular upconvertors. These reporters consist of single lanthanide ions held by a chelating ligand. These reporters have properties that are advantageous for use in biomedical diagnostics. These reporters have many of the properties of upconverting phosphor reporters-no autofluorescence, multiplexing capabilities, no photobleaching, and excitation with compact and low power diode lasers-but in a molecular scale reporter.
