Abstract :
This paper presents an initial assessment of neural network and fuzzy logic technology for flight control systems based on completed and ongoing Navy research programs. The focus is on relatively conservative applications for the near future. This includes uses in both future aircraft and upgrades of current aircraft. For each general area, specific examples and simulated results are briefly discussed for high performance jet aircraft, such as the F/A-18. Areas discussed include online learning, fault diagnostics, design tools, validation, implementing control law components, and advanced outer loop control.
