Abstract :
The automation of highways as part of the IVHS program is seen as a way to alleviate congestion on urban highways. In this context, this paper introduces a novel concept of lane assignment. Lane assignments represent the management of the path taken by a vehicle once it enters an automated multi-lane corridor. The authors believe that the development of lane assignment strategies will play an important role in the planning and development of future urban highway systems with multiple lanes and in the gradual introduction of automated driving.
