Abstract :
Research in control systems has established the potential effectiveness of control techniques utilizing elements of artificial intelligence such as fuzzy logic. The majority of control systems which incorporate heuristic reasoning use fuzzy logic controllers to map sets of error information or system state histories to appropriate control outputs. In this paper, the authors show how a fuzzy gain tuner (FGT) consisting of a sparse set of fuzzy rules can be incorporated into a DC motor control system to improve system response. The general approach, analysis and experimental results obtained from an actual DC motor system under PI control are presented and the effectiveness of the FGT control technique is discussed. The smoothness of response, response times and disturbance rejection of the PI control system with and without the proposed FGT are analyzed
