Abstract :
Breakdown strength and the discharge activities of silicone oil-polyethylene composite insulation under dc voltages have been studied using needle-plane electrode system with small gap distance of 0.5 or 2 mm. Higher breakdown voltages have been observed with LDPE film as a barrier for both polarities, although the effect was more significant under positive polarity. Continuous discharges under negative polarity are thought to be the cause for observed lower values of breakdown voltages compared to needle positive condition with composite insulation
