Abstract
A cardiological computer system, called the Cardiological Data Network System (CADANS), and its implementation in the Netherlands are described. The fundamental architecture of the network is based on the star topology. Because of widely different local situations, network protocols and operating software systems are hardware independent. CADANS was designed for easy use in experimental and clinical studies by personnel with limited computer expertise. The system was tested in a multicenter clinical trial. The first six months of practical operation were evaluated. The first experience with the network and dataflow management in this heterogeneous nationwide system is shown to be fairly positive
