Abstract :
DSCS III satellites are being further improved with the incorporation of a linear solid-state amplifier (LSSA). The LSSAs use improved GaAs FETs as power devices. Current DSCS III SSAs provide 10 W of saturated power, while the LSSAs provide 10 W of linear power. The LSSA is incorporated in two of the four channels with high linear power traffic demands. The LSSA increases the traffic handling capability by 1.6 to 2 times without significantly increased DC power subsystem demands. Overall system reliability is increased through device and component reliability improvement. LSSA component performance test data and communications channel simulator performance data are presented. The LSSA design has completed proto-flight environmental, thermal, radiation-hardness assurance, and electromagnetic compatibility tests. It will be incorporated into seven DSCS III satellites
