Abstract
A new automotive active steering actuator is introduced in this paper. The new actuator with the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front steering gear is primarily comprised of a double planetary gear and an electric actuator motor and a worm transmission. The advantages of small volume and high supporting capacity were shown in the study. Compared with the BMW´s actuator, the volume of the new actuator decreases by more than 50% and the transmission efficiency and accuracy are respectively increased by 35% and 300%. It is propitious to reduce the machining accuracy and the cost. Due to its small size, the new active steering actuator is fit for being mounted in medium and small sized vehicles.
