Abstract
An artificial dielectric leaky wave antenna is proposed for the millimeter range, and its radiation characteristics and scanning capability are estimated for the frequency band from 60 to 90 GHz. Both frequency scanning and dielectric scanning are studied theoretically for a finite-length antenna. The variation of refractive index and permittivity as a function of frequency is calculated. Both are found to increase with increasing frequency but there is no appreciable change in permeability with frequency. To analyze the propagation characteristics, real and imaginary parts of the propagation constant for the proposed leaky-wave antenna are evaluated as a function of frequency. Calculations show that the gain of the proposed antenna depends on the frequency of operation, changing from 25 dB to 28.5 dB where the frequency is varied from 60 to 90 GHz.<>
