Abstract
A study on a slotless surface-mounted permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous motor for direct-drive motion control requiring minimum torque ripple is presented. The slotless structure is studied and its main characteristics are compared to those of the conventional slotted structure. Design curves permitting the prediction of the performance of slotted and slotless cylindrical PM synchronous motors are obtained by analytical calculations. The design of a specific slotless cylindrical PM synchronous motor using NdFeB magnets by analytical and field computation approaches is presented. The theoretical performance of the designed motor is given, and its constructional details are discussed.<>
