Abstract :
This paper offers an overview in the advantages of the introduction of IPv6 protocol into Satellite communication systems. In particular, this paper will give a first approach to the use of IPv6 in transparent and regenerative platforms. Furthermore, it will show a brief overview of the impact in corporate and residential scenarios in which trials of SATSIX project will be carried out. SATSIX (satellite-based communications systems within IPv6) Project IST-2-26950, will implement innovative concepts and cost-effective solutions for broadband satellite systems and services. It will also contribute to the implementation of the eEurope action plan by encouraging the use of satellites as an enabler for universal access to e-services. Currently in the phase of implementation, trials and evaluation of results will be carried out to expect performance and available references. This project can be viewed as a next step of the technological innovations and solutions in the field of the regenerative platform. An OBP (on board processing) payload was developed under the ESA ARTES-3 programme included into AMAZONAS satellite launched mid 2004. Hereafter, SATLIFE project under FP6, close to the end, has been working in the development of new functionalities for this OBP
