Abstract :
Conventional magnet power supply systems in a particle accelerator environment have a problem of low efficiency due to the energy loss in the linear regulator which is used to reduce the ripple content of the magnet load current. The authors propose a high-current magnet power supply system configuration which replaces the linear regulator with a switch-mode ripple regulator. This replacement improves system efficiency significantly. In addition, the complete system is smaller in size and lower in cost. The basic system operation principle is explained. Theoretical analysis is performed on system steady-state operation. The harmonic reduction function of the switch-mode regulator is examined. An illustrative example is presented
