Abstract :
In January of 1991, an investigation was initiated to determine the causes of power system disturbances that were occurring at the A.B. Chance Company manufacturing facility in Centralia, Missouri, and to identify steps that could be taken to mitigate them. Some of the disturbances experienced included capacitor bank failures, telephone interference, and audible noise emanating from transformers and capacitors. The harmonic analysis of the A.B. Chance power system revealed that some of the power system disturbances could be attributed to the harmonic generating loads, specifically to the rectifier-inverter circuits which feed the induction furnaces. Two different methods to reduce the telephone interference were successful. The most effective and economical solution to the telephone interference was the installation of a new shunt capacitor bank. Telephone interference in the sales offices was reduced, and the noise emanating from the transformer near the main office building windows was eliminated
