Abstract :
In 2008 the Railway Standards and Safety Board published the document ‘Taking Safe Decisions’ [1] in recognition that ‘almost every policy, investment or operational decision taken on the railway has an impact on safety’. This paper provides an overview of the use of risk in the decision making process, with a particular focus on illustrating how risk can be used in safety decisions and safety arguments for the UK railway industry.
