Abstract :
The aim of this work was to improve the corrosion resistance of the cast ZM5 Mg alloy by laser surface alloying with Al powder. The laser alloying with Al on ZM5 Mg alloy was carried out by a pulsed Nd: YAG laser. The microhardness of the surface alloyed layer was measured by a microhardness Vickers tester. The microstructure of the alloyed layer is network. Microhardness of the laser surface alloyed layer was enhanced to 125-143Hv as compared to 72.7-92.6Hv for the untreated substrate. The corrosion resistance of the surface alloyed layer was improved as compared to alloy without laser treatment.
