Abstract :
Through analyzing the cutting process of conventional turning and ultrasonic elliptical vibration turning, and other factors that affect the surface roughness, the cutting mechanism of reducing the workpiece surface roughness with ultrasonic elliptical vibration (EVC) is presented, which is suppressing the generation of built-up and scales on the finished surface. Simultaneously, the results of cutting experiments show that the analysis is reasonable. The built-up and scales are generated easily during the process of cutting medium carbon steel, so the surface roughness of EVC is reduced to 40% of conventional cutting (CC) basically. On the other hand, during the process of machining aluminum, the roughness is basically the same.
