Abstract
Presents a new strategy by which muscle fatigue may be measured during sustained postural contractions. Due to the fatigue-resistant nature of the motor units involved in such contractions, it has long been accepted that muscle fatigue does not occur, and that these contractions are sustainable indefinitely. As the incidence of cumulative trauma disorders in the muscles of the neck, back and shoulder area is on the rise as more individuals maintain seated postures throughout their work day, it is postulated that muscle fatigue might actually be a contributing factor. Three parameters of the myoelectric signal are discussed in terms of their potential usefulness as indicators of fatigue. Experimental data are then presented which support the use of these parameters
