Abstract
This paper studied the preparation and effects of phosphonium montmorillonites (P-MMT) on flame retardance and thermal stability of the flame retardant system consisting of polypropylene (PP) and magnesium hydroxide. P-MMT were prepared by introducing hexadecyl tributyl phosphonium bromide into sodium montmorillonite through ion-exchange method. The flame residence data indicate that the heat release rate of system can be reduced from 226.7 kW/m2 to 204.4 kW/m2 by adding P-MMT and the MHRR360 from 167.6 kW/m2 to 138.3 kW/m2. The introduction of P-MMT can effectively promote the flame retardance of the system.
