Abstract :
The transient behavior of a rectangular scanning antenna was studied previously (1985) by the author. The analytical method is extended to the scanning antenna with a plane aperture. The author considers the radiation field to be the output of a time-invariant system. This makes it possible to analyze the characteristics of the antenna with linear system theory. He obtains the transfer function to prove that the system is stable and to provide a reliable basis for the transient analysis. The gain of the system can be also obtained. It is shown that the energy ratio of output and input in the scanning direction can be expressed by the gain of the system and the RMS (root-mean-square) bandwidth of the input signal. A simple formula directly calculable in the time domain is found for the far field.<>
