  • Abstract
Many millimetre-wave non-reciprocal components have been developed, utilising special properties of dielectric/dielectric or dielectric/ferrite interfaces and the non-reciprocal behaviour of ferrites under different biasing conditions. The aim of this paper is to determine, observe and summarise the fundamentals behind the theory in order to build a non-reciprocal millimetre and/or optical waveguide. Firstly, the existence of surface waves at dielectric/dielectric interface is demonstrated. Secondly, the excitation of various modes and guidance of waves in a dielectric slab waveguide is explained. Finally a basic configuration of twin (coupled) slabs with an air region (which will be changed to include a ferrite layer and will lead to a more sophisticated design of a non-reciprocal model, later on) is considered and the variation of field distributions in different regions is calculated
