Abstract :
A software package for the performance analysis of the European GSM system has been developed. Special attention was payed to the characteristics of the time-variant and frequency-selective mobile radio channel. Synthetic channel models and measured complex channel impulse responses were used in the simulations. The results are bit error ratios (BERs) and bit error patterns as function of both the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver and the time dispersion of the radio channel. A simple relation between the BERs and the channel parameters for typical rural and urban environment has been determined by measurements with a channel sounder having a bandwidth equal to that of the GSM system. Thus, the performance of the GSM system can be estimated directly from channel data, which is a useful method for efficient base-station engineering
