  • Abstract
New advances in technology and new directions in electricity regulation push for a significant increase of dispersed generation around the world. The main kinds of dispersed generation are combined heat and power (CHP), wind farms, and waste burning. As these generators become more and more compact, the wish to connect them at lower network voltages is increasing. However, distribution networks have not been designed to connect a significant amount of generation. Without any medium voltage (MV) networks adaptation, this fast expansion can affect the quality of supply as well as the public and equipment safety. Answerable for the quality of supply and the safety of the system, the distribution system operator is required by regulation to establish necessary adaptations to connect generators in best conditions. The paper discusses the impact of dispersed generation on the distribution network, and suggests a technical solution which would permit connection of more generators on the network in good conditions. If this solution is technically feasible, it can reduce the generator prejudicial effects on the high voltage constraints, and take advantage of their regulation capacity to improve the lower voltages of the network
