Abstract :
Sony Electronics Inc. studied computer monitors end of life issues. The technology presently available using existing infrastructure to deal with computer monitors end of life issues was examined. Environmental issues related to computer monitors, its material of composition and a cost and benefit analysis of recycling that material is reported. A pilot program to monitor recycling is currently underway based on the results of this study. Recommendations are also being used for future monitor design changes to improve the ability to recycle computer monitors. The study focus was to identify the optimized methods for addressing computer monitor end of life issues. These involved finding the most cost-effective methods utilizing existing infrastructure. Recovering the highest material value from scrap computer monitors, while reducing the impact to the environment, was examined. The major environmental concerns identified were the impact on landfills from the quantity of monitors forecasted to be scrapped and the hazardous material content of those monitors. Alternate solutions to landfill or municipal incineration disposal for computer monitors were identified
