Abstract :
The use of slow frequency hopping in conjunction with Reed-Solomon forward error correcting coding in cellular communication systems is investigated, and the capacity of a configuration which takes a TDMA channel structure as a starting point is discussed. The details of the encoding, receiver processing, decoding techniques, and power control measures on the forward link, required to provide high capacity for the two approaches, are also described. Simulations of the forward link, including two tiers of interferers, Rayleigh fading, and log-normal shadowing have been performed, and the resulting capacity estimates are given, and compared with the capacities of other digital cellular techniques
