Abstract :
This paper addresses the problem of the enhancement of images of handwritten bank cheques in order to facilitate their automatic processing by machine. The paper focuses on the detection and removal of additional image noise introduced to the original image through overprinting of paying-in confirmation stamps commonly placed on the cheque by banks within the United Kingdom. The removal of such stamp imprints is essential if satisfactory performance in legal and courtesy amount recognition is to be achieved by the subsequent handwritten character recognition software
