Abstract :
Summary form only given. The use of wireless communication devices has increased rapidly, with current industry estimates of approximately 70,000,000 subscribers of cellular telephone services. Because wireless communication devices emit RF energy, they have the potential to interfere with implantable devices, such as cardiac pacemakers and hearing aids. This paper presents an experimental study based on the electromagnetic interference of a radiating source with a cardiac pacemaker. This study is primarily focused on the statistical elaboration of the experimental data. Such an analysis can bring forward useful conclusions for the immunity of the implantable device with respect to many physical and electrical parameters of the configuration. For measurements, a phantom fabricated with one of the models available in the literature. A printed transmission line placed in the phantom, is excited by the electromagnetic field of an antenna (far-field region). The termination voltage of the transmission line is measured for different orientations of the phantom with respect to the radiating source. An extensive statistical analysis were carried out for the characterization of the termination voltage, induced in the transmission line depending on the positioning of the phantom. Furthermore, a chi-square test used for the investigation of the known statistical distribution was found to fit well with the experimental results
