Abstract
Intellectual property law is based on a balance between the interests and needs of the public and those of creators. When the legal systems that underpin intellectual property no longer maintain the correct balance or even worse, neglect it, then respect for those systems and intellectual property erodes. This paper discusses the current level of respect for intellectual property, and measures that could be employed to addresses problems with the current system, particularly for patents and copyright.
